Myofascial Release

What is Fascia?

Fascia is a connective tissue that has the appearance of a cob-web. This web covers and permeates every muscle, organ and nerve in the body.  It is a single unit that provides continuity throughout the body connecting each person from head to toe.

Trauma, posture, or injuries of any kind cause pulls to develop in the fascia. These pulls are so strong they create changes in posture which can cause subsequent disc problems or pain patterns that can not be explained.   The web also functions like saran wrap and can wrap around and compress nerves causing neurological symptoms.

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release is a gentle sustained pressure that elongates the fascial adhesions so the body can return to proper alignment.  That is why at Abramson Physical Therapy PLLC, we analyze each individual to ascertain what is going on in your body and implement ways that we can fix it.  Myofascial Release is a whole body approach which is important because we correct the dysfunction rather then just focusing on the pain.

How Does This Technique Work With Other Therapies?

The goal of treatment is to get you active again and back to the things that you love to do.  Very often from disuse, muscles become deactivated or inhibited and this is often confused with weakness.  Muscle Energy works directly on the muscles to help improve the motor control.   The body is then able to recruit muscles so the person can move better and be stronger.  Pilates and Pelvic/Lumbar Stabilization Programs are also an integral part of your program, enabling you to learn how to move and feel confident to return to the activities that you love without fear of re-injuring yourself again.
